Hello and welcome to our May 2021 retro games update. We have some pretty exciting news this month including a physical release of a game that was not originally released in North America. Show your love for retro gaming and support these companies that continue to keep our passion alive. There is also exciting news from Evercade, creators of the Evercade portable and physical compilation cartridges.
There are two new releases that I am very excited about, one is from Retro-Bit and one is from Evercade. Friday May 21st Retro-Bit has published Mega Man – The Wiley Wars, and made available for pre-order through Limited Run Games and Castlemania Games. This is being released as a Collectors Edition only at $69.99 US which is a pretty good deal for this type of bundle. There are lots of fun feelies, and of course the game with the traditional clam shell case, reversible case art insert and color manual.
MEGA MAN – THE WILEY WARS
EVERCADE VS AND ATARI ARCADE 1, GAELCO ARCADE 1, DATA EAST ARCADE 1, TECHNOS ARCADE 1 COMPILATIONS
Evercade is releasing a new console called the Evercade VS. This is a home console that can hold 2 cartridges at a time. Currently the only function this provides is allowing you to select games from either cartridge without swapping. To me the bigger news, which may lead me to purchasing the console, is they have released a new compilation. They have released 4 compilations currently with more to come hopefully. You get the usual Atari Arcade games, then there is also Gaelco, which apparently a Spanish publisher with some cool looking games, Data East and Technos arcade games. I don’t think i will ever add Arcade machines or boards to my collection so this is an awesome way to play those titles. You know I like my physical carts and this is a way to collect a bunch of great games at a good cost.
GALENCIA – KHAOS SPHERE A COMMODORE 64 GAME
Changing things up a bit we have the first of 2 computer games, from IndieGoGo. First up is Galencia Khaos Sphere for the Commodore 64 computer. The developer plans on releasing the game on cartridge and has a tier which includes a “Big Box” version. I have a Commodore 64 but have not been able to really enjoy it. But I am always excited to support an indie developer releasing physical retro video games. Getting this game will give me a good reason to get it fired up again. The developers first comment is that he has been dealing with health issues, so as always invest at your own risk. That said it looks like a really cool project and I love that its on a cartridge in a big box.
SKALD: AGAINST THE BLACK PRIORY
The last game we are covering in our update this month is SKALD: Against the Black Priory. This developer says the game is heavily influenced by the Ultima series. Unfortunately, this game is not being produced on physical media but through IndieGoGo you can get a version that comes in a Big Box with a map, manual and other feelies. It is also available on GoG and Steam, I will always go with GoG first since it is DRM free, https://www.gog.com/game/skald_against_the_black_priory . I have not played the game but it has great pixel art and looks like it was made with a lot of love. I am definitely going to pickup the Big Box version and a copy on GoG to play.

That is all we have for now, stay healthy and have fun. If you still have some stimulus money or just some extra cash for spending on entertainment, maybe one of the above releases will tickle your fancy. If I pickup any of these games you better believe there will be a Let’s Play on my channel, MJRetroGamer.
