Retro Games Update February 2021

What a great time to be a retro gaming enthusiast! The retro gaming has grown to a strength that allows for opportunity for creative dreamers to make the game they always wanted to play. Whether you are a collector, passionate retro gamer, or testing the waterers, we live in a time with more options than i ever imagined.

  • Reproductions for games that may otherwise be to costly for those of us that prefer to own the physical game pak.
  • Licensed reprints by companies like Limited Run Games.
  • For us yankees, localized releases of games that didn’t make it to North America when first produced.
  • More fan translations than ever so we can play exclusives released on the Famicom with systems like the Retron 5.
  • Hacks of favorites to give them a new look, new worlds or more challenging play.
  • Finally we have brand new titles or homebrews from individual passion projects to small studios of indie developers that share the love for these classic consoles. Many of these are able to deliver a professional finish because of platforms like Kickstarter and Indie GoGo that allow our community to express their love and support by investing in these projects.

I admittedly was late to the scene and am now catching up, so apologies if a lot of this is old news for you. Maybe there are some you missed or like me you were completely unaware. If i missed anything please make sure to leave a comment with the title and where to find it so we can continue building a list of new games for a system that is now 30 years old!

I was inspired to go down this rabbit hole after watching a video on the MetalJesusRocks channel featuring John Riggs. Admittedly the video was three years old so some of the games are no longer being sold as physical game paks. It was a lot of fun discovering how much creativity and support there is in the community to produce new games for the iconic Nintendo Entertainment System. Below are links to these new properties, with a focus on titles that are sold in a physical format. Enjoy!!

Is anyone else going back to conventions? Apologies, due to my procrastination, the pre-order for ALWA’S AWAKENING has closed but is still available on Steam. The NES physical release was a demake of Indie Developers Elden Pixels Steam…

Mad Stalker Genesis and Abarenbo Tengu and Zombie Nation for NES Plus Switch Pre-Orders

All I can say is what a time to be alive. I would have never thought that in 2021 I would have the opportunity to open new or reproduced, factory fresh games for my favorite 16 bit and 8 bit consoles. I hope the community continues to show support so that companies will continue to be motivated to produce the games that still bring us joy today. I did not have a Genesis growing up…

Retro Games Update — September 2021

What is up RGL family! This much is very thin but there is a NES release so worth its own article even if I cannot find anything else. So I tend to focus on physical releases of games because that is where my love and passion lives. But, I also enjoy and am always glad to see the support of retro video games published virtually or on modern console collections. During the recent Nintendo Direct,…

Retro Games Update — August 2021

Welcome to the August 2021 retro games update, happy to announce some new physical releases for our favorite counsels. That said I am definitely seeing a substantial increase in the price of new physical releases on Kickstarter. Though i want to support my community I am concerned the increase is due more to cashing in then increases in the cost of goods. It has definitely caused me to cut back on the projects I support…
