Retro Games Update March 2021

What’s up RGL family! Bringing you the monthly update on new retro games for our favorite retro consoles. We may also highlight previous projects that are still active or available for purchase or pre-order. It continues to blow my mind on the amount of support in developing new games for 15-20 year old video game systems. Our goal is to bring awareness to these projects so that everyone who shares a similar passion has the opportunity to add them to their collection.

INFINITY GBC
The first game I want to highlight is an unpublished Gameboy Color game that was unfinished but will soon have a Kickstarter campaign to complete the game and publish on physical carts. It is being published by inCube8 Games and a link to their announcement can be found here, https://incube8games.com/blogs/games/infinity-gbc. The official site for the game is https://infinitygbc.com. Here you can find a brief backstory on the game and a trailer for the game and its SNES quality pixel sprite goodness. Infinity is an RPG which is all I need to know, I love NES and SNES RPGs. I think this project is still early days but you can sign up for updates and we will be tracking as well. – GAMEBOY COLORhttps://incube8games.com/blogs/games/infinity-gbc

GHOUL GRIND: NIGHT OF THE NECROMANCER
Ghoul Grinder is a side-scrolling NES game with great looking sprite work looking at the limited demo. That said there is not a lot of detail about the game play. However, you can download a demo, you will need the Mesen emulator, all necessary links are provided on the publishers site, https://woogworx.itch.io/ghoul-grind-night-of-the-necromancer-demo It is an auto-scroller but it does have boss fights. I am assuming this was done to limit the complexity of development. I am not a fan of this play mechanic so probably will not invest in the project. That said the music in the demo is solid and as mentioned before the sprite work is nice. The project is still open for backing, so check out the demo and if you like it back the project. – NEShttps://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1640415401/ghoul-grind-night-of-the-necromancer

TROPHY
Trophy is an action platformer in the style of 8-bit NES Mega Man developed by Gradual Games. I watched a couple reviews, one by John Hancock and both were very positive. I couldn’t find a video of the game in its final release, both John and the other reviewer had the game in its press release form which only had the first four levels. The final release has 9 levels. Both reviews commented that the music was sold and the controls are tight. I will definitely be purchasing a copy for my self, it goes for $60 US plus shipping. – NEShttps://6502collective.com/store/p_1239926/trophy.

KIRA KIRA STAR NIGHT DX (NES)
Kira Kira is a Japanese NES exclusive that is getting a physical release by Limited Run Games. This is horizontal arcade auto-scroller where you have to collect a certain amount of stars before the timer runs out. Its a cute looking game but this style is not a style i care for. Check out some gameplay on YouTube and if interested, here is the link to order https://limitedrungames.com/collections/other/products/kira-kira-star-night-dx-nes

8Bit Music Power (NES)
8Bit Music Power is an interactive music program for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The game pak includes tracks from legendary Japanese chiptune artists that plays while you entertain yourself with mini-games or browsing an art gallery. It also includes a sound mixer that lets you tweak the included tracks to give them a little of your own flavor. – NEShttps://limitedrungames.com/collections/other/products/8bit-music-power-nes

What is up RGL family, can't believe it is October already. This year has gone by so quickly. Hope everyone is well, I am excited that conventions are back and will be going to one next month. Is anyone else going back to conventions? Apologies, due to my procrastination, the pre-order for ALWA’S AWAKENING has closed but is still available on Steam. The NES physical release was a demake of Indie Developers Elden Pixels Steam…

Mad Stalker Genesis and Abarenbo Tengu and Zombie Nation for NES Plus Switch Pre-Orders

All I can say is what a time to be alive. I would have never thought that in 2021 I would have the opportunity to open new or reproduced, factory fresh games for my favorite 16 bit and 8 bit consoles. I hope the community continues to show support so that companies will continue to be motivated to produce the games that still bring us joy today. I did not have a Genesis growing up…

Retro Games Update — September 2021

What is up RGL family! This much is very thin but there is a NES release so worth its own article even if I cannot find anything else. So I tend to focus on physical releases of games because that is where my love and passion lives. But, I also enjoy and am always glad to see the support of retro video games published virtually or on modern console collections. During the recent Nintendo Direct,…

Retro Games Update — August 2021

Welcome to the August 2021 retro games update, happy to announce some new physical releases for our favorite counsels. That said I am definitely seeing a substantial increase in the price of new physical releases on Kickstarter. Though i want to support my community I am concerned the increase is due more to cashing in then increases in the cost of goods. It has definitely caused me to cut back on the projects I support…
